A 4.5mm (US 7) hook

A 5mm (US H/8) hook

TENSION

Work 4 pattern repeats; [(dc, ch3, 2tr) into ch-3 loop] and 8 rows in Lace Stitch to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) using 4.5mm hook.

NOTES

The cardigan is worked in separate pieces from the top down. The Back and Fronts are joined before the waistband, which is worked in one piece. The Peplum is then worked in one piece from the waistband down. Sleeves are then added and the front bands finish the garment. The cardigan is fastened with a brooch/belt or fastener of choice.

LACE STITCH PATTERN

Foundation row 2tr into the fourth ch from the hook, *skip 2 ch, (dc, ch2, dc) into the next ch; repeat from * to the last 3 sts, skip 2 ch, dc into the last st, turn.

Row 1 (RS) Ch3, 2tr st at base of ch, *(dc, ch3, 2tr) into the ch-2 loop; rep from * to last 3 sts, skip 2 tr, dc into top of beg ch-3, turn.

Row 2 Ch3, 2tr st at base of ch, *(dc, ch3, 2tr) into ch-3 loop; repeat from * to last 3 sts, skip 2 tr, dc into top of beg ch-3, turn.

Row 2 forms pattern.

BACK

With 4.5mm hook, ch55 (61: 70: 76).

Work the Foundation Row and Rows 1 and 2 of the Lace Stitch Pattern. [17 (19: 22: 24) pattern repeats]

Repeat Row 2 for a further 12 (13: 13: 15) rows, mark both ends of the row with coloured thread to mark armhole edges.

Continue in pattern, repeating Row 2 until the work measures 35 (35: 37: 37) cm, ending on a RS row. Take a note of the total number of rows worked so that the same number can be worked on the Front.

Fasten off.

FRONT (MAKE 2)

With 4.5mm hook, ch22, (25: 28: 31).

Work the Foundation Row and Rows 1 and 2 of the Lace Stitch Pattern. [6 (7: 8: 9) pattern repeats]

Repeat Row 2 for a further 12 (13: 13: 15) rows, mark both ends of the row with coloured thread to mark the armhole edges.

Continue in pattern, repeating Row 2 until work measures 35 (35: 37: 37) cm, ending on a RS row, making sure that the total number of rows matches Back.

Fasten off.

Join the shoulder and side seams (under the marked armhole edges).

WAISTBAND

With WS facing, and 4.5mm hook, begin at lower Right Front and join yarn to work with a ss.

Continue as follows:

Foundation row (WS) Ch3, 2tr into st at the base of ch, skip 2 tr, (dc into ch-3 loop, 2tr into the next dc) 5 (6: 7: 8) times across the lower Right Front, dc into the last ch, 2tr into the joining seam, (dc into the ch-3 loop, 2tr into the next dc) 16 (18: 21: 23) times across Back, 1dc into last chain on Back, 2tr into joining seam, (dc into ch-3 loop, 2tr into the next dc) 5 (6: 7: 8) times along lower Left Front, ending with dc into last st, turn. [88 (100: 115: 127) sts]

Row 1 Ch1, (does not count as st) dc in each st to end, turn.

Work a further 6 rows, repeating Row 1.

PEPLUM

With WS facing, begin as follows:

Foundation row Ch3, 2tr into st at the base of ch, *skip 2 sts, (dc, ch3, 2tr) into the next st; repeat from * to the last 3 sts, skip 2 sts, dc into the last st, turn. [29 (33: 38: 42) pattern repeats]

Change to 5mm hook.

Work 9 rows as Row 2 of the Lace Stitch Pattern.

SLEEVES (MAKE 2)

With 4.5mm hook, ch49 (52: 52: 55).

Work the Foundation Row and Rows 1 and 2 of the Lace Stitch Pattern. [15 (16: 16: 17) pattern repeats]

Work a further 6 rows, repeating Row 2.

Row 9 Ch3, 1tr into st at the base of ch, (dc, ch3, 2tr) into the next ch-3 loop 14 (15: 15: 16) times, ending with 1dc into the beginning ch-3, turn.

Row 10 Ch3, 1tr into st at the base of ch, (dc, ch3, 2tr) into the next ch-3 loop 14 (15: 15: 16) times, ending with 1dc into the beg ch-3, turn.

Row 11 Ch3, (dc, ch3, 3tr) into the next ch-3 loop 14 (15: 15: 16) times, ending with 1dc into the beg ch-3, turn.

Row 12 Repeat Row 11.

FRONT BAND

With 4.5mm hook, join yarn with a ss to lower Right Front, and work Front Band as follows:

Foundation row Ch1 (does not count as st), work 16dc along Peplum edge, 6dc along Waistband edge, 45 (45: 51: 51) dc along the Right Upper Front edge, 12 (14: 17: 17) dc along Back Neck, 45 (45: 51: 51) dc along Left Upper Front edge, 6dc along Waistband edge, 16dc down Peplum edge. [146 (148: 163: 163) sts]

Next row Ch1 (does not count as st), dc in each st to end, turn.

Repeat last row a further 6 times.

Fasten off.

TO FINISH

Sew in sleeves and finish ends neatly.
