A 3mm (US C/2 or D/3) hook

Tapestry needle

10 small buttons

TENSION

19.5 sts and 10 rows to measure 10x10cm (4x4in) over treble crochet using a 3mm hook or size required to obtain tension (Stitch tension will be equivalent to 39 sts over 20cm)

ABBREVIATIONS

Front Post Quadruple Treble (FPqtr) Yrh 4 times, insert hook from front to back to front around post of st indicated, yrh and draw through st, *yrh and draw through 2 loops; repeat from * until there is one loop left on hook

NOTES

Skirt is worked in one piece from the bottom up.

BUTTONHOLES

Buttonholes are worked over the first 7 sts of the row as follows:

Ch3 (counts as first tr throughout), 2tr, ch1, skip next tr, 3tr.

On the following row, work a tr into the ch-sp.

Work the first buttonhole on the 6th row (this will be a RS row), and then work a buttonhole row on every following 4th row.

SKIRT

Ch207 (217: 227: 237: 247: 257: 267).

Row 1 (WS) Ch3 (counts as first tr throughout), tr into 4th ch from hook, tr in each ch to end, turn.

Row 2 (RS) Ch3, tr in each of next 6 sts, FPtr in next st, 21 (23: 23: 25: 26: 28: 30) tr, FPtr in next st, *24 (25: 27: 28: 29: 30: 31) tr, FPtr in next st**; repeat from * to **, 48 (50: 52: 54: 58: 60: 62) tr, FPtr in next st, repeat from * to ** twice, 21 (23: 23: 25: 26: 28: 30) tr, FPtr in next st, tr in last 7 sts, turn.

Row 3 Work a tr in each tr of the previous row, and a BPtr in each post st of the previous row, turn.

Rows 2 and 3 set the pattern.

SHAPING

Row 4 (Decrease row) Cont in patt as set, working a tr2tog over the 2 sts before the 2nd and 3rd FPtr, tr2tog after the 3rd and 4th FPtr, tr2tog over the 2 sts before the 5th and 6th FPtr, tr2tog after the 6th and 7th FPtr (8 sts decreased).

Work 5 rows in patt without shaping, remembering that on the second of these rows you will start the buttonhole sequence, as described above.

Repeat the last 6 rows another 4 times, keeping the patt correct and continuing with the buttonhole sequence.

Work 1 row in pattern.

Repeat the last 2 rows another 4 times, do not fasten off.

BELT LOOPS

(RS) *Ss along to next FPtr, FPqtr around FPtr 3 rows below; repeat from * to last 7 sts, ss in each st to end.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

TO FINISH

Position the buttons at the front, in line with buttonholes. Sew in place.
