As you change colors in the contrast cable, wrap the yarn not being used around the working yarn to keep it secure.

Back

With A, cast on 110 (120, 130, 142) stitches. Work in k1, p1 rib until piece measures 15 (15 1/2, 16, 16 1/2)" (38 [39.5, 40.5, 42]cm), ending with a wrong-side row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Working in rib pattern as set, bind off 5 (6, 7, 8) stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off 3 stitches at beginning of following 2 rows. Bind off 1 stitch at beginning of next 4 rows—90 (98, 106, 116) stitches.

Work even in pattern until armhole measures 9 (9 1/2, 10, 10 1/2)" (23 [24, 25.5, 26.5]cm), ending with a wrong-side row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Finishing

COLLAR

With A, pick up approximately 64 (68, 72, 76) stitches around neckline. Work in k1, p1 rib for 3" (7.5cm). Change to B and work in pattern for 2 rows more. Bind off.

Sew the shoulder seams. Set in the sleeves; sew side and sleeve seams. Weave in the ends. Block lightly to measurements.

RED TRIM (MAKE 2)

Using double-pointed needles and CC, cast on 4 stitches.

Work I-cord for 26" (66cm).

Bind off, weave in ends, and sew along the front edges of the cardigan with mattress stitch, being careful to hide the seams.

Sew in zipper using needle and thread. With a contrasting-colored thread, baste each side to the zipper, then unzip. With the matching thread, and using backstitch, sew the zipper in place, tucking the top ends of the zipper between the zipper and the garment. If necessary, whipstitch the edges of the zipper to the garment.
