Materials

2 (2) (3) x 50g (125m) balls of Debbie Bliss Ecobaby (100% cotton) in White (01) and 2 balls in contrast (Rose 12 or Denim 29).

Pair of 3 1/4mm (No. 10) and 3 3/4mm (No. 9) knitting needles; 6 buttons.

Tension

23 stitches and 30 rows, to 10 x 10cm, over stocking stitch, using 3 3/4mm needles.

Abbreviations

K, knit; p, purl; st, stitch; tog, together; inc, increase (by working twice into same st); dec, decrease (by taking 2 sts tog); ss, stocking st (k on right side and p on wrong side); up 1, pick up loop lying between needles and k or p into back of it; nil, meaning nothing is worked here for this size; yt, yarn forward to make a st.

Note

Yarn amounts are based on average requirements and are therefore approximate. Instructions are given for small size. Where they vary, work figures in round brackets for larger sizes. Instructions in square brackets are worked as stated after 2nd bracket. 

Left leg: With 3 1/4mm needles and White, cast on 46 (48) (50) sts.

Rib row: [K1, p1] to end.

Repeat rib row, 8 times more.

Increase row: Rib 8 (6) (5), up 1, [rib 5, up 1] to last 8 (7) (5) sts, rib to end - 53 (56) (59) sts. Change to 3 3/4mm needles.

Join in contrast, and working throughout in stripes of 6 rows contrast and 6 rows White, beginning with a k row, ss 10 (14) (18) rows. Inc 1 st each end of next row and 11 (12) (13) following alternate rows - 77 (82) (87) sts. Ss 5 rows.

Shape crotch: Cast off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row and 2 following alternate rows - 65 (70) (75) sts.

Ss 1 row. **

Break yarn and leave sts on a st holder.

Right leg: Work left leg to **.

Body: Joining row: K across sts of right leg, then k across sts of left leg - 130 (140) (150) sts.

Ss 1 (7) (11) row(s).

For front opening: Cast off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows -124 (134) (144) sts. Ss another 30 rows.

Divide for back and fronts: Next row: K29 (31) (33), turn and work on these sts for right front.

Right front: Ss 36 (40) (42) rows.

Shape neck: Next row: P24 (26) (28) and turn, leaving remaining 5 sts on a safety pin. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows - 20 (22) (24) sts. Ss 1 (1) (3) row(s).

Shape shoulder: Cast off 10 (11) (12) sts at beginning of next row - 10 (11) (12) sts.

K1 row. Cast off.

Return to end of dividing row, rejoin yarn and cast off 1 st for underarm, k another 63 (69) (75), turn and work on these 64 (70) (76) sts for back.

Back: Ss 41 (45) (49) rows.

Shape shoulders: Cast off 10 (11) (12) sts at beginning of next 4 rows - 24 (26) (28) sts. Leave these sts on a st holder.

Left front: Return to remaining sts, rejoin yarn and cast off 1 st, k to end - 29 (31) (33) sts. Ss 36 (40) (42) rows.

Shape neck: Next row: P5 and leave these sts on a safety pin, p to end - 24 (26) (28) sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows - 20 (22) (24) sts.

Ss nil (nil) (2) rows.

Shape shoulder: Cast off 10 (11) (12) sts at beginning of next row -10 (11) (12) sts.

P1 row. Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

With 3V4mm needles and White, cast on 36 (40) (44) sts.

Work 9 rows in rib as on left leg.

Increase row: Rib 4, [up1, rib 4] to end - 44 (49) (54) sts.

Change to 3 3/4mm needles.

Working in stripes as given on left leg, beginning with a k row, ss 2 rows.

Inc 1 st each end of next row and 8 (9) (10) following 4th rows - 62 (69) (76) sts.

Ss 1 (3) (5) row(s). Cast off.

Neckband

Join shoulder seams. With wrong side facing, rejoin White and using 3 1/4mm needles, p5 sts from right front safety pin, turn, k across these 5 sts, pick up and k9 (10) (11) sts from right front neck shaping, k across 24 (26) (28) sts of back neck, pick up and k9 (10) (11) sts from left front neck shaping, and finally, k across 5 sts from left front safety-pin - 52 (56) (60) sts.

K 5 rows. Cast off kwise.

Buttonhole band

With right side facing, using 3 1/4mm needles and White, pick up and k58 (60) (63) sts along right front opening edge for girl and left front opening edge for boy, including neckband.

K 1 row.

For girl: Buttonhole row: K9 (11) (9), yf, k2tog, [k7 (7) (8), yf, k2tog] 5 times, k2.

K 2 rows. Cast off.

For boy: Buttonhole row: K2, yf, k2tog, [k7 (7) (8), yf, k2tog] 5 times, k9 (11) (9).

K 2 rows. Cast off.

Button band

Work to match buttonhole band, omitting buttonholes.

To make up

Join sleeve seams, set in sleeves. Join back and front crotch seams, continuing front seam to beginning of opening. Lap buttonhole band over button band and catch down row-ends to cast-off sts at base of opening. Join leg seams. Sew on buttons.
