3 (3) (4) (4) 50g (125m) balls of Rico Design Baby Cotton Soft DK (50% cotton, 50% acrylic) in Mint (031).

Pair of 3mm (No. 11) and 3 1/4mm (No. 9) knitting needles; 2 buttons.

Tension

22 stitches and 28 rows, to 10 x 10cm, over main pattern, using 3 3/4mm needles.

Abbreviations

K, knit; p, purl; st, stitch; tog, together; ss, stocking st (k on right side and p on wrong side); gst, garter st (every row k); skpo, slip 1, k1, pass slip st over; s2kpo, slip 2 as if about to work k2tog, k1, then pass 2 slip st over; yf, yarn forward to make a st.

Work border pattern thus:

1st row: K to end.

2nd row: [K2tog, yf] to last st, k1.

3rd row: K to end.

4th row: K1, [yf, k2tog] to end.

Repeat last 4 rows, twice more.

K 2 rows.

Change to 3 3/4mm needles.

1st row: K to end.

2nd row and 5 following alternate rows: P to end.

3rd row: K2tog, [yf, k2, k2tog, yf, k1, yf, skpo, k2, yf, s2kpo] to last 11 sts, yf, k2, k2tog, yf, k1, yf, skpo, k2, yf, skpo.

5th row: K2, [yf, skpo, k2, yf, skpo, k1, k2tog, yf, k3] to last 11 sts, yf, skpo, k2, yf, skpo, k1, k2tog, yf, k2.

Buttonhole row: K11 (12) (13) (14), k2tog, yarn round needle twice to make 2 sts, skpo, k17 (19) (21) (23), k2tog, yarn round needle twice to make 2 sts, skpo, k to end.

Next row: K13 (14) (15) (16), p1, k19 (21) (23) (25), p1, k to end.

Gst 3 (3) (5) (5) rows.

Cast off firmly kwise.

Front

Work as back to **.

Waistband: K 9 (9) (13) (13) rows.

Shape armholes: Next row: Cast off 4 sts, k to last 4 sts, cast off remaining 4 sts-39 (43) (47) (51) sts.

With right side facing, rejoin yarn to remaining sts and continue in gst until front measures 7 (8) (10) (11) cm from beginning of waistband, ending with a right side row.

Shape for straps: Next row: K7 (7) (9) (9) and leave these sts on a safety pin for right strap, cast off next 25 (29) (29) (33) sts, k to end.

Work on last set of 7 (7) (9) (9) sts for left strap.

Left strap: Continue in gst until strap measures 18 (20) (23) (25) cm.

Cast off kwise.

Right strap: With right side facing, rejoin yarn to inner edge of 7 (7) (9) (9) sts on safety pin and k to end.

Continue in gst until strap measures 18 (20) (23) (25) cm. Cast off kwise.

To make up

Join side seams. Fold left strap over right strap at back and sew a button to end of straps to correspond with buttonholes.
