Gauge

18 sts and 33 rows = 4 inches/10cm in Alternating Garter Rib pat (blocked).

To save time, take time to check gauge.

Special Abbreviation

Slip, slip, purl (ssp): Slip 2 sts 1 at a time kwise to RH needle; return sts to LH needle in turned position and p2tog-tbl—a left-leaning single dec.

Row 2 and all RS rows: Knit.

Rows 5 and 7: *K1, p1, k2; rep from * across.

Pattern Notes

Raglan cap-sleeve cardigan is worked from the top down in 1 piece with an allover Alternating Garter Rib pattern and button band in the back.

The inverted front V starts a few inches above the waist and widens until it ends at the sides.

Each color-block section is worked with a separate ball of yarn using the intarsia technique; be sure to interlock the yarns at each color change.

Cardigan

Collar

With B, cast on 68 (72, 76, 80, 84) sts.

Work 5 rows in Alternating Garter Rib pat.

Work buttonhole on next row, then on RS rows [every 12 rows] 13 (13, 13, 14, 14) times, as follows:

Buttonhole row (RS): Work in established pat to last 6 sts, k2tog, yo, work to end.

Work even until collar measures 2 3/4 inches, ending with a WS row; cut B.

Pm in fabric in center of last row to indicate beg of front yoke.

Yoke

Set-up row (RS): With A, k13 (14, 15, 15, 16) right back sts; with B, k1 seam st, then k10 (10, 10, 12, 12) sleeve sts, k1 seam st; with 2nd ball of A, k18 (20, 22, 22, 24) front sts; with 2nd ball of B, k1 seam st, k10 (10, 10, 12, 12) sleeve sts, k1 seam st; with 3rd ball of A, k13 (14, 15, 15, 16) left back sts.

Note: Maintaining established color blocking throughout (with front and backs worked in A, and sleeves and seam sts worked in B), work the 4 seam sts in St st and all other sts in established rib pat.

Work 1 WS row even.

Raglan inc row (RS): Maintaining color-block pat, [work in established pat to 1 st before seam st, kfb, k1, kfb] 4 times, work to end—76 (80, 84, 88, 92) sts.

Working new sts into established rib pat, rep Raglan inc row [every RS row] 15 (16, 17, 18, 21) times, ending with a WS row—196 (208, 220, 232, 260) sts, with 42 (44, 46, 50, 56) sts each sleeve, 50 (54, 58, 60, 68) front sts, 29 (31, 33, 34, 38) sts each back and 4 seam sts.

Continue increasing front and backs while working sleeves even, as follows:

Front/back inc row (RS): Maintaining color-block pat, *work in established pat to 1 st before end of A section, kfb; work across all B sts, kfb; rep from * across front and 2nd sleeve, work in pat to end—200 (212, 224, 236, 264) sts.

Rep Front/back inc row [every RS row] 4 (6, 9, 11, 12) times, ending with a WS row—216 (236, 260, 280, 312) sts, with 42 (44, 46, 50, 56) sts each sleeve, 60 (68, 78, 84, 94) front sts, 34 (38, 43, 46, 51) sts each back and 4 seam sts.

Work even until yoke measures 6 3/4 (7 1/4, 7 3/4, 8 1/4, 8 3/4) inches from center front yoke marker, ending with a WS row.

With RS facing, cut 2nd and 3rd balls of A (for front and left back).

Body

Division row (RS): *With A, work right back sts; with B, loosely bind off all B sts in pat, cut B; using backward-loop method and A, cast on 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) underarm sts, pm for side seam, cast on 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) underarm sts; rep from * across front and 2nd sleeve, work in pat to end—144 (160, 180, 196, 216) sts.

Maintaining 1 st on each side of seam markers in St st and working all other sts in established rib pat throughout, work even until body measures 6 1/4 (6 1/4, 6 1/4, 6 3/4, 6 3/4) inches from underarm or until body measures approx 6 (6, 6, 5 1/4, 5) short of desired final length, ending with a WS row.

Inverted V

Division row (RS): Maintaining rib, work 68 (76, 86, 94, 104) sts, k2tog twice; join 2nd ball of A, ssk twice, work to end— 32 (36, 41, 45, 50) sts each front to marker.

Working both sides at once with separate balls of yarn, shape inverted V as follows:

Double dec row (WS): Maintaining rib pat, work to 4 sts before division point, ssp twice; p2tog twice, work to end— 30 (34, 39, 43, 48) sts each front.

Double dec row (RS): Maintaining rib pat, work to 4 sts before division point, k2tog twice; ssk twice, work to end— 28 (32, 37, 41, 46) sts each front.

Work Double dec row [every row] 3 (6, 9, 14, 18) more times—22 (20, 19, 13, 10) sts each front.

Work 0 (1, 0, 1, 1) WS row(s) even.

Single dec row (RS): Maintaining rib pat, work to 2 sts before division point, k2tog, ssk, work to end—21 (19, 18, 12, 9) sts each front.

Purling edge sts at V on WS rows throughout, rep Single dec row [every RS row] 21 (19, 18, 12, 9) times—34 (38, 43, 46, 51) sts each side, no front sts rem. Loosely bind off all sts kwise on WS.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block to measurements. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.

Designer's TIP

The yoke of the cardigan is worked using five balls of yarn at the same time. To help keep the yarns from tangling, keep them in individual yarn bowls or jars.
