About the yarn DK; 100m per 50g ball; 100% cotton

Needles 4mm circular, 80cm 4mm straight

This design is knitted flat but a circular needle is recommended to accommodate the large number of sts at the yoke

Other supplies 8 mother-of-pearl buttons, 10mm stitch holder or spare straight needle

Tension 21 sts x 28 rows = 10cm measured over St st

This cardigan is worked flat in one piece up to the armholes. The sleeves are worked separately and then the body and sleeve stitches are joined at the yoke. It features simple lace patterns that can be worked either from charts or written instructions, whichever you prefer.

Buttonholes

Buttonholes are worked throughout the cardigan. For each size, work a buttonhole row when the piece measures;

S: 5, 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41 & 47 cm.

M: 6, 13, 19, 25, 31, 37, 42 & 49 cm.

L: 6, 12, 19, 25, 32, 38, 45 & 51 cm.

XL: 6, 12, 19, 26, 33, 40, 47 & 53 cm.

2X: 6, 13, 20, 27, 34, 41, 48 & 55 cm.

3X: 7, 15, 22, 29, 36, 43, 50 & 57 cm.

Buttonholes are worked on RS rows as follows: K2, k2tog, yo, work in patt to end.

Body

With circular needle, cast on 221 (235, 249, 277, 305, 333) sts.

Rows 1-4: Knit.

Rows 5-16: K5, work Pattern A from chart or written instructions 16 (16, 17, 19, 21, 23) times, k5. After chart is complete, 191 (203, 215, 239, 263, 287) sts rem.

Row 17: K50 (53, 56, 62, 68, 74), pm, k91 (97, 103, 115, 127, 139), pm, k50 (53, 56, 62, 68, 74).

Row 18 (RS): K5, p to last 5 sts, k5.

Row 19 (WS): Knit.

Rows 18-19 set St st. Cont in St st with G st edge until piece measures 7cm from cast-on edge, finishing after a RS row.

Next Row (dec): [K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, ssk] twice, k to end. 4 sts dec'd

Work 5 (7, 11, 7, 5, 7) rows in St st with G st edge, as set in rows 18-19.

Rep these last 6 (8, 12, 8, 6, 8) rows 6 (5, 3, 5, 6, 5) more times. 163 (179, 199, 215, 235, 263) sts

Don't forget to work your buttonholes while you are working this section of the body.

Cont in St st with G st edge, as set in rows 18-19, without further decs until piece measures 24cm from cast-on edge, finishing after a WS row.

Next Row (RS): [K to 1 st before marker, m1, k1, sm, k1, m1] twice, k to end. 4 sts inc'd.

Work 1 (1, 3, 5, 5, 5) rows in St st with G st edge, as set in rows 18-19.

Rep these last 2 (2, 4, 6, 6, 6) rows 7 (6, 5, 4, 6, 6) more times. 195 (207, 223, 235, 263, 291) sts

Cont in St st with G st edge, as set in rows 18-19, without further incs until piece measures 35 (37, 38, 40, 41, 43) cm from cast-on edge, finishing after a WS row.

Separate for yoke

Next Row (RS): K47 (50, 54, 56, 63, 70), cast off 8 (8, 8, 10, 10, 10), k85 (91, 99, 103, 117, 131), cast off 8 (8, 8, 10, 10, 10), k to end.

Put piece aside to work the sleeves.

Sleeves

Make 2 the same

With straight needle, cast on 62 (64, 65, 71, 74, 76) sts.

Rows 1-4: Knit.

Row 5: Cast off 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5) sts, [k7 (7, 9, 9, 12, 12), kfb] 6 (6, 5, 5, 4, 4) times, k to last 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5) sts, cast off rem sts. 60 (62, 66, 69, 70) sts

Put first sleeve aside on stitch holder or spare needle and work second in the same way.

YOKE

Yoke Joining Row (WS): [K5, p42 (45, 49, 51, 58, 65)] from Left Front, p60 (62, 66, 69, 70) from Left Sleeve, p85 (91, 99, 103, 117, 131) from Back, p60 (62, 66, 69, 70) from Right Sleeve, [42 (45, 49, 51, 58, 65), k5] from Right Front. 299 (315, 331, 347, 379, 411) sts

Next Row (RS): K5, work Row 1 (1, 3, 3, 3, 3) of Pattern B from chart or written instructions 18 (19, 20, 21, 23, 25) times, k6.

Next Row: K5, work Row 2 (2, 4, 4, 4, 4) of Pattern B 18 (19, 20, 21, 23, 25) times, pi, k5.

These last 2 rows set the position of the Pattern B with G st edges. Cont as set until Pattern B is complete. 227 (239, 251, 263, 287, 311) sts

Beginning with Row 1 (1, 1, 1, 3, 3), cont in patt as set, working Pattern C from chart or written instructions. 119 (125, 131, 137, 149, 161) sts

Next Row: Knit.

Next Row: [K12 (18, 30, 66, 20, 14), k2tog] 7 (5, 3, 1, 5, 9) times, k to end. 112 (120, 128, 136, 144, 152) sts Knit 2 rows.

Cast off.

Making up: Sew sleeve seams and underarm sts.

Block to dimensions and weave in ends.

Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
