Size 2 (2.75mm) straight needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle

2 half-inch leaf buttons (optional)

32 stitches and 40 rows = 4" (10cm) in stockinette stitch

Rose Stems

Row 1 (RS): *K2, p4, k2tog, yo, k4; repeat from * to end.

Row 2: *P6, k4, p2; repeat from * to end.

Row 3: *K1, p4, k2tog, yo, k5; repeat from * to end.

Row 4: *P7, k4, p1; repeat from * to end.

Row 5: *P4, k2tog, yo, k6; repeat from * to end.

Row 6: *P8, k4; repeat from * to end.

Row 7: *K3, yo, ssk, p4, k3; repeat from * to end.

Row 8: *P3, k4, p5; repeat from * to end.

Row 9: *K4, yo, ssk, p4, k2; repeat from * to end.

Row 10: *P2, k4, p6; repeat from * to end.

Row 11: *K5, yo, ssk, p4, k1; repeat from * to end.

Row 12: *P1, k4, p7; repeat from * to end.

Repeat Rows 1-12 for pattern.

Mitts (make 2)

Using MC, cast on 96 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): Purl.

Row 2: Purl.

Work in stockinette stitch, beginning with a knit row, for 2" (5cm), ending with a wrong-side row.

Next row (RS): *K2tog; repeat from * to end—48 stitches.

Work in garter stitch for 1" (2.5cm), ending with a wrong-side row.

Next row (RS): K1, M1, [k4, M1] 5 times, k6, [M1, k4] 5 times, M1, k1—60 stitches.

Next row: Purl.

Work Rows 1—12 of Rose Stems pattern 5 times.

Work in k1, p1 rib for 4 rows. Bind off in pattern.

FINISHING

Fold the mitt in half lengthwise. Sew the side seam, leaving a 1 3/4" (4.5cm) opening for the thumb beginning 2" (5cm) down from top edge.

Roses (make 2)

Using CC, cast on 5 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): Knit.

Row 2: *K1, M1; repeat from * to last stitch, k1—9 stitches.

Row 3: Purl.

Row 4: *K1, M1; repeat from * to last stitch, K1—17 stitches.

Row 5: Purl.

Row 6: *K1, M1; repeat from * to last stitch, K1—33 stitches.

Row 7: Purl.

Row 8: *K1, M1; repeat from * to last stitch, K1—65 stitches.

Row 9: Purl.

Bind off.

Coil the piece into a rose shape and sew it to the mitts as shown. Weave in the ends.

Optional: sew the leaf button at the base of the rose, opposite the side that corresponds with the hand of the glove (right side for left glove, left side for right glove).
