Yarn: Elisabeth Beverley Plant Dyed Cashmere (DK/light worsted weight; 100% cashmere; 180 m/196 yds per 55 g skein)
Shade A: Red Cabbage; 1 skein
Temaricious Cotton Threads (3/6; 100% cotton; 130 cm/42 yds per 10 g skein)
Shade B: Coral; 1 skein
Shade C: Soft pink; 1 skein
Shade D: Soft peach; 1 skein
Gauge: 26 sts & 28 rows = 10 cm/4" over Slip Stitch Pattern on 3.25 mm needle after blocking.
Needles: 3.25 mm/US 3 AND 3 mm/US 2 1/2 knitting needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round. Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.
Notions: 3 stitch markers, stitch holder or scrap yarn
PATTERN BEGINS (make both Mitts alike)
Using yarn A, larger needles and the backwards loop method, cast on 38 (42,46) sts. Knit one row. Join for working in the round being careful not to twist. PM to indicate beg of round.
Rounds 1-2: Knit.
Round 3 (Picot): [Yo, k2tog] to end.
Rounds 4-6: Knit.
Round 7: Fold cast-on edge inwards along round 3 to create the picot trim. *K2tog with first st on needle and corresponding st from cast-on edge directly below; rep from * to end of round. Turn work inside out. The side showing the cast-on edge will now be the RS of the mitt.
Rounds 8-9: Knit.
Round 10: [P2tog] to end. 19 (21,23) sts
Round 11: [Yo, k1] to end, 38 (42,46) sts
Round 12: Knit.
Holding two strands of B together at back of work to join, work Slip Stitch Pattern with Thread as foil slipping sts pwise wyib:
Round 13: *K1 with A, [bring B forward between needles to front of work, sl knitted st st back to LH needle, take B around the knitted st to the back of work, sl knitted st back to RH] twice (thus wrapping the knitted st twice), sl next st; rep from * to end.
Round 14: Using A only, knit.
Rounds 15-16: Rep rounds 13-14.
Rounds 17-20: Holding two strands of C together in place of B, rep rounds 13-16.
Rounds 21-24: Holding two strands of D together in place of C, rep rounds 13-16.
Continue with yarn A only to end as foil:
Round 25: [P1, sl 1 pwise wyib] to end of round.
Round 26: Knit.
Rounds 25-26 set Slip Stitch Pattern.
Work a further 6 (8,10) rounds in Slip Stitch Pattern as set.
Round 1: [P1, sl 1 wyib] to end.
Round 2: K21, (k1, yo, k1) into next st, k to end. 40 (44,48) sts
Round3: Patt 22 sts, PM, p1, PM, patt to end. 2gusset markers placed
Round 4: K to marker, p1, k to end.
Continue working Slip Stitch Pattern before and after markers and inc every third round between markers as foll:
Round 5: Patt to marker, SM, M1P, p1, M1P, SM, patt to end. 42 (46,50) sts
Round 6: K to marker, SM, p3, SM, k to end.
Round 7: Patt to marker, SM, p3, SM, patt to end.
Round 8: K to marker, SM, M1P, p to next marker, MIP, SM, k to end. 2 sts inc
Round 9: Patt to marker, SM, p to next marker, SM, patt to end.
Round 10: K to marker, SM, p to next marker, SM, k to end.
Maintaining Slip Stitch Pattern, inc 2 sts as set on next round then every third round 3 (4,5) times.
52 (58, 64) sts; 13 (15,17) sts between gusset markers
Size 2 ONLY: K to marker, pl5, k to end.
ALL sizes again: Patt to marker, remove gusset marker, place next 13 (15,17) sts on scrap yarn or stitch holder, remove gusset marker, using backward thumb method cast on 3 sts, patt to end. 42 (46,50) sts
Work 16 (18,20) rounds in Slip Stitch Pattern, or until mitt measures 2.5 cm/1" less than desired length. Change to smaller needle.
Rib rounds 1-8: [P1, k1] to end.
Cast off in rib.
With RS facing, place 13 (15, 17) held sts onto smaller needles. Rejoin yarn A, pick up and k5 sts across gap (1 st from each side of gap and 3 sts from cast-on edge).
Round 1: [K1, p1] 6 (7, 8) times, k2tog, p1, k1, p2tog, PM to indicate beg of round. 16 (18,20) sts
Rounds 2-8: [K1, p1] to end.
Cast off in rib.
Weave in ends and block gently.
