Poncho knitting patternThis poncho fits well over the shoulders and has slits you can put your arms through if you want freedom of movement. The poncho is worked from the top down, making it easy to adjust the total length.

FINISHED SIZE S (M, L, XL)

YARN

Chunky weight (#5 Bulky).

Shown here: Gepard Puno (68% baby alpaca, 22% nylon, 10% merino wool; 120 yd [110 m]/50 g): gray #1311, 7 (8, 8, 9) balls.

NEEDLES

Sizes U.S. 10 and 10 3/4 (6 and 7 mm): 16 and 32" (40 and 80 cm) circular (cir).

Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS

Markers; cable needle (cn); tapestry needle.

GAUGE

14 sts and 21 = 4" (10 cm) in St st on larger needles.

poncho

With short smaller cir needle, CO 64 (64, 68, 68) sts. Place marker (pm) and join for working in rnds, being careful not to twist sts.

Work in garter st in the round (alternate knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd) until piece measures 2 1/4" (5.5 cm) from CO edge, ending with a purl rnd.

Change to short larger cir needle.

NEXT (SET-UP) RND: K1, pm, k27 for back, pm, k1, pm, kg for left shoulder, pm, k1, pm, k27 (57, 31, 31) for front, pm, k1, pm, k3 for right shoulder.

Note: Change to long larger cir needle when there are too many sts to work comfortably on shorter needle.

RND 1: *K1, slm, MiR, knit to next marker, M1L, slm; rep from * 3 more times—8 sts inc'd.

RND 3: *K1, slm, knit to next marker, slm; rep from * once more, k1, slm, (k1, bobble) 7 (7, 8, 8) times, (k1, slm) twice, knit to end of rnd.

RND 4: Rep Rnd 1—8 sts inc'd.

RND 5: Knit.

RND 6: *K1, slm, knit to next marker, slm; rep from * once more, k1, slm, P31 (31, 35, 35), slm, k1, slm, knit to end of rnd.

RND 7: Rep Rnd 1—8 sts inc'd.

RND 8: Knit.

RND 9: *K1, slm, knit to next marker, slm; rep from * once more, k1, slm, (k1, bobble) 8 (8, 9, 9) times, k1, slm, k1, slm, knit to end of rnd.

RND 10: Rep Rnd 1—8 sts inc'd.

RND 11: Knit.

RND 17: Knit.

RND 18: *K1, slm, knit to next marker, slm; rep from * once more, k1, slm, k1, P37 (37, 41, 41), (k1, slm) twice, knit to end of rnd.

Rep Rnds 13-18 five (five, six, six) more times, then rep inc rnd 0 (1, 0, 1) more time(s)—193 (300, 212, 220) sts; 59 (61, 63, 65) sts for back, 59 (61, 67, 69) sts for front, 35 (37, 39, 41) sts for each shoulder, and 4 raglan sts. Work new sts in St st. Remove all markers except the beg-of-rnd marker.

Cont even until piece measures 12 1/2 (12 1/2, 13, 13)" (31.5, 33, 33J cm) from neckband, ending with a plain knit rnd. Cut yarn.

side slits

Sl last 30 (32, 35, 37) sts from tip of the right needle to tip of the left needle, si next 69 (71, 75, 77) sts to short larger cir needle, leave rem 123 (129, 137, 143) sts on hold on longer needle. Join yarn to beg with a RS row. Work even for 4 3/4" (12 cm), ending with a WS row. Cut yarn and leave sts on hold on shorter needle.

Rejoin yarn to longer needle to beg with a RS row. Work even in St st (knit RS rows, purl WS row) for 4 3/4" (12 cm), ending with a WS row.

NEXT (JOINING) ROW: (RS) K123 (129, 137, 143), work sts from short cir needle in next patt row, k30 (32, 35, 37), pm for beg of rnd.

Cont even until piece measures 24 (24, 24 1/2, 24 1/2)" (61 [61, 62, 62] cm) from neckband, ending with a knit rnd after a bobble rnd.

Change to long smaller cir needle. Reg with a purl rnd, work 11 rnds in garter st. BO loosely knitwise.

side-slit edging

With short smaller cir needle and RS facing, pick up and k23 sts along front edge of side slit. Knit 5 rows. BO knitwise.

With short smaller cir needle and RS facing, pick up and k23 sts along back edge of same side slit. Knit 1 row. BO knitwise. Sew ends of wide edging on RS to cover slit, and ends of narrow edging on WS under upper band. Work edgings on other side of poncho same way.
