NOTES

If the shaping breaks up any yarn-over/decrease pair, do not work the yarn-over or the decrease; simply knit to the next pair.

INC 1

At beginning of RS rows K1, M1.

At end of RS rows M1, k1.

DEC 1

At beginning of RS rows K1, SSK.

At end of RS rows K2tog, k1.

CHART PATTERN

Row 1 K2, yo, SSK, k2, [k2, k2tog, yo twice, SSK, k2] to last 5 stitches, k2, k2tog, yo, k2.

Row 2 K1, p5, [p3, k1, p4] to last 6, p5, k1.

Row 3 K3, yo, SSK, k1, [k1, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, SSK, k1] to last 5, k1, k2tog, yo, k3.

Rows 4, 6, and 10 K1, purl to last stitch, k1.

Row 5 K4, yo, SSK, [k2tog, yo, k4, yo, SSK] to last 5, k2tog, yo, k4.

Row 7 K4, k2tog, yo, [yo, SSK, k4, k2tog, yo] to last 5, yo, SSK, k4.

Row 8 K1, p4, k1, [p7, k1] to last 6, p5, k1.

Row 9 K3, k2tog, yo, k1, [k1, yo, SSK, k2, k2tog, yo, k1] to last 5, k1, yo, SSK, k3.

Repeat Rows 1-12 for pattern.

Back

With smaller needles, waste yarn, and using a temporary cast-on, cast on 116 (132, 148, 164, 172).

Border

Change to main yarn. Beginning with a WS row, work 5 rows stockinette.

Next row: Picot turning row (RS) K1, [yo, k2tog] to last stitch, k1. Work 5 rows stockinette. Remove waste yarn and place stitches from temporary cast-on onto longer circular needle.

Next row: Joining row (RS) Fold border in half to WS at turning row and join as follows: [K2tog (1 stitch from border with 1 stitch from temporary cast-on)] to end —116 (132, 148, 164, 172) stitches. Work in garter stitch for 1", end with a WS row.

Body

Change to larger needles. Work Chart until piece measures 14 (14 1/2, 14 1/2, 15, 15)", end with a WS row.

Shape armhole

At beginning of every row, bind off 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) twice, then 2 stitches 4 (6, 10, 14, 16) times. Dec 1 each side every RS row 5 (7, 7, 7, 6) times, then every other RS row 1 (0, 0, 0, 0) time — 84 (92, 98, 104, 108) stitches. Work even until armhole measures 7 1/2 (8, 8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2)", end with a WS row.

Shape shoulders

At beginning of every row, bind off 4 (5, 5, 6, 6) stitches 6 times, 5 (5, 6, 6, 6) twice, then 5 (4, 6, 5,6) twice. Bind off remaining 40 (44, 44, 46, 48) stitches.

Front

Work as for back until armhole measures 5 1/2 (6, 6 1/2, 7, 7 1/2)", end with a WS row. Mark center 20 stitches for neck.

Shape front neck

Work to marker, join a second ball of yarn and bind off marked center stitches, work to end. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, at each neck edge bind off 3 once, 2 stitches 2 (3, 3, 3, 4) times, then 1 stitch 3 (3, 3, 4, 3) times — 22 (24, 27, 29, 30) stitches each shoulder. Work even until piece measures same as back to shoulder, end with a WS row. Shape shoulders as for back. 

Sleeves

With smaller needles, waste yarn, and using a temporary cast-on, cast on 76 (76, 76, 84, 84). Work border as for back. Change to larger needles. Work Rows 1 and 2 of Chart. Continuing chart, Inc 1 each side of next RS row, every RS row 0 (2, 3, 0, 1) times, then every other RS row 5 (4, 5, 6, 7) times—88 (90, 94, 98, 102) stitches. Work even until piece measures 4 1/2 (4 1/2, 5, 5, 5 1/2)", end with a WS row.

Shape cap

At beginning of every row, bind off 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) twice, then 2 stitches 4 (6, 6, 6, 6) times. Dec 1 each side every RS row 5 (2, 0, 0, 0) times, every other RS row 5 (8, 10, 11, 8) times, then every 6 rows 0 (0, 0, 0, 3) times. Work 1 WS row even. At beginning of every row, bind off 2 stitches 6 (4, 4, 4, 4) times, 3 twice, then 4 twice. Bind off remaining 22 (22, 24, 24, 26) stitches.

Finishing

Block pieces. Sew shoulder seams.

Neck band

With RS facing and shorter circular needle, pick up and knit along neck edge at the following rates: 3 stitches for every 4 rows along vertical and diagonal edges AND 1 stitch for every bound-off stitch. Count stitches and adjust to an even number on next round if necessary. Place marker and join to work in the round. Round 1 Purl. Round 2 Knit. Repeat last 2 rounds 3 times, then repeat Round 1 once more. Knit 5 rounds, marking first round with removable stitch marker.

Next round: Picot turning round K1, [yo, k2tog] to last stitch, k1. Knit 5 rounds. Bind off. Fold neck band in half to WS at turning round and sew bound-off stitches to corresponding stitches of round marked with removable stitch marker.

Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
