Drops Karisma 100% wool (approx 100m per 50g)

2 x 50g balls 77 Light Oak (A)

Small amounts in each of:

2[3]g x 65 Denim Blue (B)

23[26]g x 40 Light Old Pink (C)

2[3]g x 52 Dark Mustard (E)

3[4]g x 64 Grey Purple (F)

1 each 3mm and 4mm circular needles 40cm long

4g x 65 Denim Blue (B)

10g x 40 Light Old Pink (C)

2g x 52 Dark Mustard (E)

4g x 64 Grey Purple (F)

1 set each 3mm and 4mm dpns

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

TENSION

21 sts and 28 rows to 10cm over st st using 4mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

TIPS

To get a marked and tight shape on the Beret, moisten it and stretch it out on a plate approx 24cm (9 1/2in) in diameter. Leave hat to dry and take it carefully off the plate. Do this every time the hat is washed.

PATTERN NOTE

When working garter stitch in the round work one round knit, one round purl. These two rounds form one g st ridge.

BERET

With 3mm circular needle and A, cast on 104 [112] sts, join to a rnd being careful not to twist sts and pm to mark start of rnd.

Rib rnd: (K2, p2) to end of rnd.

Rep last rnd until rib meas4cm [1 1/2in). Change to 4mm circular needle.

Next rnd: Knit.

Work from Chart A4, working patt rep 13[14] times around and working incs as indicated on Chart. 156 [168] sts.

Shape crown

Arrow 1: Dec 24 sts evenly around as folls:

Size 1 only: (K4, k2tog, k5, k2tog) around (132 sts).

Size 2 only: (K5, k2tog) around (144 sts).

Arrow 2: Dec 22(24] sts by working (k4, k2tog) to end. 110 [120] sts.

Arrow 3: Dec 26(24] sts by working (k2[3], k2tog) to end. 84 [96] sts.

Arrow 4: Dec 20(28] sts by working as folls:

Size 1 only: (K2, k2tog) to end (64 sts).

Size 2 only: (K1, k2tog, k2, k2tog) to end (68 sts).

Both sizes

At end of Chart A4, cont in A only as folls:

Next rnd: Knit.

Next rnd: (K2, k2tog) to end. 48 [51] sts.

Next rnd: Knit.

Next rnd: (K1, k2tog) to end. 32 [34] sts.

Next rnd: Knit.

Next rnd: K2tog around. 16 [17] sts.

Next rnd: Knit.

Next rnd: K2tog around. 8 [9] sts.

Cut yarn, pull through rem sts and secure on inside of Beret.

WRIST WARMERS (MAKE 2)

Using 3mm dpns and A, cast on 56 sts and join in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. Pm to mark start of rnd.

Rib rnd: (K2, p2) to end of rnd.

Rep last rnd until work meas 2.5cm (1 in).

Next rnd: (K5, k2tog) around (48 sts). Change to 4mm dpns.

Work from Chart A5, working rounds marked with Arrows as folls:

Arrow 1: (K6, k2tog) around (42 sts).

Arrow 2: (K19, k2tog) twice (40 sts).

Cont to end of Chart A5. Work should meas approx 22cm (8 3/4in).

Cont in A only.

Next rnd: (K10, ml) four times (44 sts). Change to 3mm dpns.

Rib rnd: (K2, p2) to end of rnd.

Rep last rnd until work meas 2.5cm (1 in).

Cast off loosely in rib.

TO FINISH

Weave in loose ends.
