YOU WILL NEED

Bergere de France Initial 4 ply 48% recycled cotton, 47% recycled polyester, 5% miscellaneous fibres (approx 150m per 50g ball)

7[7:8:8:9] x 50g balls 35149 Gris clair

1 pair each 3mm and 3.5mm needles

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

TENSION

23 sts and 30 rows to 10cm (4in) over st st using 3.5 mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

BACK

Using 3mm needles cast on 93[103:111:121:133] sts.

Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1* rep from *to* ending with k1.

Row 2: *P1, k1* rep from *to* ending with p1.

These 2 rows form 1/1 rib, cont as est until work measures 4cm (1 1/2in) (14 rows) total.

Change to 3.5mm needles and starting with a knit row cont in st st for 16[16:18:18:18] rows.

Next row (RS - inc): K2, inc 1, work to last 2 sts, inc 1, k2.

Rep this inc on every foll 16th[16th:18th:18th:18th] row 5[5:1:1:1] more times, then on every foll 0[0:16th:16th:16th] row 0[0:4:4:4] times. 105[115:123:133:145] sts.

Armholes

When work measures 41[42:43:43:44]cm (16[16 1/2:17:17:17 1/4]in) (124[128:130:130:134] rows) total, cast off at the beg of every row as foll: 3 sts 2[2:2:2:4] times, 2 sts 2[2:4:6:4] times, 1 st 8[10:8:8:12] times. 87[95:101:107:113] sts.

Shoulders & Neck

When work measures 62[64:66:68:70]cm (24 1/2[25:26:26 3/4:27 1/2]in) (188[194:200:206:212] rows) total cont as folls:

Next row (RS): Cast off 6[6:7:7:8] sts, k24[26:27:29:30] sts, cast off the central 27[31:33:35:37] sts for the neck, k30[32:34:36:38] sts.

Each side will now be completed separately.

Next row (WS): Cast off 6[6:7:7:8] sts, work to central cast off sts and put rem sts on a stitch holder.

*Next row (neck edge): Cast off 3 sts, work to end.

Next row (shoulder edge): Cast off 6[7:7:8:8] sts, work to end.

Next row (neck edge): Cast off 2 sts, work to end.

Next row (shoulder edge): Cast off 6[7:7:8:8] sts.

Work 1 row straight.

Cast off rem 7[7:8:8:9] sts*.

With WS facing pick up sts left on the stitch holder and rep from * to *.

FRONT

Work as for Back until the armhole shaping has been completed. 87[95:101:107:113] sts.

Opening

When work measures 49[51:53:55:57]cm (19 1/4(20:21:21 1/2:22 1/2]in) (148[154:160:166:172] rows) total cont as folls:

Next row (RS): K39[43:46:49:52] sts, cast off the central 9 sts, work to end.

Next row (WS): Work to cast off sts, put rem sts on a stitch holder.

Work will now be completed in 2 sections. *Cont on the rem 39[43:46:49:52] sts until work measures 57[59:61:63:65]cm (22 1/2[23 1/4:24:24 3/4:25 1/2]in) (172[178:184:190:196] rows) total.

Neck shaping

Cast off at neck edge on every alt row as foll: 5[7:8:9:10] sts once, 3 sts once, 2 sts once, 1 st 4 times. 25[27:29:31:33] sts.

Shoulder

When work measures 62[64:66:68:70]cm (24 1/2[25:26:26 3/4:27 1/2]in) (188[194:200:206:212] rows) total, cast off at shoulder edge on every alt row as foll: 6[6:7:7:8] sts 3[1:3:1:3] times, 7[7:8:8:9] sts 1[3:1:3:1] times*.

With WS facing pick up sts left on stitch holder and rep from * to *.

SLEEVES

Using 3mm needles cast on 73[77:83:89:97] sts.

Work in 1/1 rib as for Back until work measures 4cm (1 1/2in) (14 rows) total.

Change to 3.5mm needles and starting with a knit row cont in st st.

Top of sleeve

When work measures 10cm (4in) (32 rows) total, cast off at the beg of every row as foll:

3 sts 0[0:2:2:4] times, 2 sts 2[4:2:4:4] times, 1 st 42[40:44:42:38] times, 2 sts 4[2:2:4:4] times, 3 sts 0[2:2:2:4] times and the rem 19 sts.

BORDERS (2)

Using 3mm needles cast on 31 sts.

Row 1 (RS): K2, *p1, k1* rep from *to* until 3 sts rem, p1, k2.

Row 2: P2, *k1, p1* rep from *to* until 3 sts rem, k1, p2.

Rep these 2 rows until work meas 3.5cm (1 1/4in) (12 rows) total, leave sts on a spare needle.

NECKBAND

Using 3mm needles cast on 159[165:169:173:177] sts.

Work in rib patt as for the Borders until work measures 3.5cm (1 1/4in) (12 rows) total.

Band no 1

Leaving all of the purl sts unworked work 6 rows of st st on the rem knit sts, then leave on a spare needle.

Band no 2

Return to the purl sts and work 6 rows of st st, then leave on a spare needle.

TO FINISH OFF

Join shoulder seams.

Borders

Using backstitch graft a border to each edge of the opening.

Place the Left Front on top of the Right Front, then sew the short edges of the borders along the 9 st opening on the Front.

Neckband

Graft band no 1 around neck edge using back stitch on the RS of work, starting and ending 2cm (3/4in) from the edge. Then graft band no 2 around the WS of work (see diagram below).

Sew the tops of the sleeves into armholes. Sew the sleeve and side seams.
