3/4-inch buttons: 6 [6, 6, 6, 8, 8]

GAUGE
5 ch-3 sps = 3 inches
PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Vest is made in 1 piece from bottom up, with no sewing and very little finishing.
Chain-3 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated.
Chain-4 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet and chain-1 unless otherwise stated.
Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.
VEST
BOTTOM BORDER
Row 1: Ch 197 [209, 215, 221, 233, 245], sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. (196 [208, 214,220,232,244] sc)
Rows 2 & 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
BODY
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, [ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in next sc] across, turn. (65 [69, 71, 73, 77, 81] ch-3 sps)
Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), 4 dc in next ch-3 sp, [ch 1, dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, 4 dc in next ch-3 sp] across, ending with dc in last st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 3, [sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3] across, ending with sc in last st, turn. (65 [67, 69, 71, 73, 77] ch-3 sps)
Row 4: Ch 4 (see Pattern Notes), dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, [4 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1] across, ending with dc in last st, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first dc, sk next ch-1 sp, [ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp] across, ending with sc in last st, turn.
Next rows: Rep rows 2-5 consecutively for pattern until piece measures 3 [3, 3, 4, 4, 4] inches from bottom, ending with row 5. At end of last row, do not fasten off.
ARMHOLE OPENING
Using the 4 stitch markers to mark Armhole Openings, place stitch markers in 21st and 22nd [21st and 22nd, 22nd and 23rd, 22nd and 23rd, 23rd and 24th, 24th and 25th] sc in from each end of Vest to mark both Armhole Openings.
RIGHT FRONT
Work in pattern across to first stitch marker, ending with dc in first marked sc, turn.
Next rows: Continue in pattern until piece measures 13 [14, 14 1/2, 15,15 1/2,16] inches from beg, ending with row 2 or row 4 of pattern. At end of last row, fasten off.
LEFT FRONT
Join (see Pattern Notes) in 4th marked sc, ch 3, work in pattern until piece measures the same as Right Front. At end of last row, fasten off.
BACK
Join in 2nd marked sc, ch 3, continue in pattern across to next marker, continue in pattern until piece is 1 row longer than Fronts, ending with row 3 or row 5. At end of last row, fasten off.
FINISHING
Using ch sps on last row of Back for buttonholes, mark button placement on Fronts to match every other ch sp.
Sew 3 [3, 3, 3, 4, 4] buttons to each Front to match buttonholes.
If blocking is desired, place garment on padded surface, sprinkle lightly with water, pat into shape, let dry completely.
