Knit chevron dress pattern

Dress knitting patternSizes XS (S,M,L)

Shaping is built into the stitch pattern of this dress, which begins with simple stripes. As chevron rows are added, the fabric becomes narrower for a neat fit at the waist, then chevron rows are slowly removed for bust shaping.

When measuring, hold knitting upright to allow for downward stretch— known as "hung" gauge.

Dress is worked in singlerow stripes that transition through all of the colors from hem to shoulder.

Body

With smaller needle and A, cast on 240 (264, 288, 312). With B, knit 1 row. With C, knit 1 row. With A, knit 1 row. Continue to rotate through A, B, C sequence for a total of 12 knit rows.

Change to larger needle. Place marker and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Increase round [K10 (11, 12, 13), M1] to end — 264 (288, 312, 336) stitches.

Work even in A, B, C sequence until piece measures 5".

Cut A, replace with D (for a B, C, D sequence). [Work Ripple 1 Round, knit 7 rounds] until piece measures approximately 10".

Cut B, replace with E (for a C, D, E sequence). [Work Ripple 1 Round, knit 5 rounds] until piece measures approximately 15".

Cut C, replace with F (for a D, E, F sequence). [Work Ripple 1 Round, knit 3 rounds] until piece measures approximately 20".

Work Ripple 1 Round. Knit 1 round.

Next round: Decrease round [K2tog, k18 (20, 22, 24), SSK] to end — 240 (264, 288, 312) stitches. Knit 1 round.

[Work Ripple 2 Round, knit 3 rounds] until piece measures 22".

Cut D, replace with G (for an E, F, G sequence). [Work Ripple 2 Round, knit 1 round] until piece measures 23 (24, 25, 25)", or 1" below the waist, making sure to hold upright when measuring to allow for downward stretch.

Change to smaller needle. Continue as established until piece measures 25 (26, 27, 27)".

Cut E, replace with H (for an F, G, H sequence). [Work Ripple 2 Round, knit 1 round] until piece measures 27 (28, 29, 29)".

Change to larger needle. [Work Ripple 2 Round, knit 3 rounds] until piece measures 31 (32, 33, 33)".

Cut F, replace with I (for a G, H, I sequence). [Work Ripple 2 Round, knit 5 rounds] until piece measures 37 (38, 39, 39)", end ready for a knit round.

Armhole bind-offs

Work is divided to work back and forth from this point.

Bind off 7 (8, 9, 10), work across 106 (116, 126, 136) and place on hold for front, bind off 14 (16, 18, 20), work to end, turn.

Next row (WS) Bind off 7 (8, 9, 10), p13 (14, 15, 16), pm, work in pattern to 13 (14, 15, 16) before armhole bind-off, pm, p13 (14, 15, 16)—106 (116, 126, 136) stitches for back.

Marker are placed after the first repeat and before the last repeat to assist with armhole shaping. Work those stitches in stockinette.

The color sequence currently has two strands at the beginning of round (center of armhole): cut those and reattach one at either side of back as required by the color sequence.

Back

Shape armholes

Continuing in G, H, I sequence, Dec 1 each side every RS row 8 (9, 10, 11) times and continuing to work Ripple 2 Row (same as Ripple 2 Round) between markers, every 6 rows twice, then every 8 rows twice—90 (98, 106, 114) stitches.

5 stitches remain outside of markers.

Work even in stockinette and established stripe sequence until armhole measures 6 (6 1/2, 7, 8)". Bind off.

Front

Return held front stitches to larger needle and join yarns as needed to maintain G, H, I sequence. Work as for back until armhole measures approximately 4 (4 1/2, 5, 6)", end with a WS row. Mark center 30 (32, 34, 36) stitches for front neck.

Shape neck

Continuing in established pattern and stripe sequence, work to marker, join a second ball of yarn and bind off marked center stitches, work to end. At each neck edge, bind off 3 stitches once, then 2 stitches once. Dec 1 each side of next RS row — 24 (27, 30, 33) stitches remain on each side. Work even until armhole measures same as back to shoulder. Bind off.

Sleeves

With smaller needle and E, cast on 46 (52, 56, 66). With F, knit 1 row. With G, knit 1 row. With E, knit 1 row. Continue to rotate through E, F, G sequence for a total of 12 knit rows.

Change to larger needle and continuing in stockinette, Inc 1 each side every 6 rows 15 times — 76 (82, 86, 96) stitches and AT SAME TIME, work E, F, G sequence until piece measures 4 1/2".

Cut E, replace with H. Work F, G, H sequence until piece measures 9 1/2.

Cut F, replace with I. Work G, H, I sequence until piece measures 16", or desired length to underarm.

Shape cap

Continuing in G, H, I sequence, bind off 7 (8, 9, 10) at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 each side every RS row 20 (22, 25, 30) times. Bind off remaining 22 (22, 18, 16) stitches.

Finishing

Sew left shoulder seam.

Neck band

With smaller, shorter needle and H, pick up and knit (PUK) along neck edge at the following rates: 2 stitches for every 3 rows along vertical and diagonal edges AND 1 stitch for every bound-off stitch. Do not join. With H, knit 1 row. With I, knit 2 rows. With G, knit 2 rows and AT SAME TIME, decrease 8 evenly spaced across front neck edge on last row. With I, knit 1 row. Bind off.

Sew right shoulder and neck band seam. Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew edges of bottom garter band together.
