YOU WILL NEED

Stylecraft Special DK (100% premium acrylic, 100g/295m), 2 (2: 2: 3) balls of Yarn A Denim (1302), 1 ball in Yarn B Matador (1010) for all sizes, see table for measurements

A 4mm (US G/6) hook

18 buttons, 2cm diameter

TENSION

15 sts and 20 rows to measure 10x10cm(4x4in) over dc using a 4mm hook or size needed to obtain correct tension

ABBREVIATIONS

Double crochet 3 sts together (dc3tog) (Insert hook into next st, pull up a loop) 3 times, yrh, pull through all loops on hook.

NOTES

Back and Front are worked separately in rows and seamed down the sides. Extra button flaps are added at the top of the waist seam on both sides to make dressing easy. Pocket and contrast surface crochet detail are added at the end. Compare the finished Waist measurement in the table to the required Chest measurement because the dungarees come up higher than the Waist.

BACK

FIRST LEG

With Yarn A, ch18 (20: 22: 24).

Foundation row Dc into 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end, turn. (17 (19: 21: 23) sts]

Row 1 (WS) Ch1 (does not count as a stitch throughout), dc in each st to end, turn.

Repeat Row 1 another 1 (1: 3: 3) times.

Leg Shaping

Row 1 (WS) Ch1, 2dc into the first st, dc into each st to end, turn. [18 (20: 22: 24) sts]

Row 2 Ch1, dc into each st to end, turn.

Row 3 Rep Row 1. [19 (21: 23: 25) sts]

Rows 6-8 Ch1, dc into each st to end, turn.

Row 9 Rep Row 1. [20 (22: 24: 26) sts]

Repeat Row 2 another 3 (5: 7: 11) times.

Fasten off and put aside.

SECOND LEG

With Yarn A, ch18 (20: 22: 24).

Foundation row Dc into 2nd ch from hook and into each ch to end, turn. [17 (19: 21: 23) sts]

Row 1 (WS) Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

Repeat Row 1 another 1 (1: 3: 3) times.

Leg Shaping

Row 1 Ch1, dc into each st to last st, 2dc into last st, turn. [18 (20: 22: 24) sts]

Row 2 Ch1, dc into each st to end, turn.

JOINING LEGS

Row 1 With WS facing, ch1, dc into the following 19 (21: 23: 25) sts, 2dc into the last st, ch 2 (2: 4: 4), pick up first leg and with WS facing 2dc into the first st, dc in each st to end, turn. [44 (48: 54: 58) sts]

Row 2 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

Repeat Row 2 another 21 (25: 29: 35) times.

WAIST SHAPING

Rows 2-5 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

FRONT

Work as given for Back to **.

BIB

Skip the first 6 (8: 8: 10) sts of the top of the Front and rejoin Yarn A to the following st with a ss.

Row 1 Ch1, working into the back loop only, work 20 (20: 26: 26) dc, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked. [20 (20: 26: 26) sts]

Work 14 (16: 20: 22) rows in dc st.

Next row Ch1, working into the front loop only, dc in each st to end.

Fasten off.

POCKET (MAKE 2)

With Yarn A, ch14 (14: 18: 18).

Foundation row Dc into 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end, turn. [13 (13: 17: 17) sts]

Row 1 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

Repeat Row 1 another 9 (11: 13: 13) times.

POCKET SHAPING

Row 1 Ch1, dc2tog, dc to last 2 sts, dc2tog, turn. [11 (11: 15: 15) sts]

Repeat Row 1 until 3 sts remain.

Next row Ss over 3 remaining sts, ss around entire pocket edge to neaten.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

TO MAKE UP

With Yarn B, surface crochet a border 1cm in from the edge on both Pockets (use the images as a guide).

With Yarn B, surface crochet the waistband and pocket shapes onto the Front.

With Yarn B, surface crochet the waistband onto the Back.

With RS together and using Yarn A, sew together the side seams from the bottom upwards, leaving 8cm open for the waist at the top on each side.

Sew up the inner leg seam.

With Yarn B, surface crochet around the bottom of each leg.

Sew one Pocket onto the Bib and one Pocket to one side of the bottom.

With RS facing and using Yarn A, ss around the Back top edge, ch1 at corner, work down and up the side opening, ch1 at corner and work along the Front edge, the Bib, ch1 at corner, continue with even sts to first ss.

Fasten off.

BUTTON BAND (MAKE 2)

With Yarn A, ch12.

Foundation row Dc into 2nd ch from hook, dc in each st to end, turn. [11 sts]

Row 1 Ch1, dc into each st to end, turn.

Row 2 Ch1, 1dc into the following 2 sts, (ch1, skip 1 st, 1dc into the following 2 sts) 3 times, turn.

Rows 3-5 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

Row 6 Repeat Row 2.

Row 7 Repeat Row 1.

Row 8 (RS) Ss into each st to end.

Fasten off.

STRAPS (MAKE 2)

With Yarn A, ch3.

Foundation row Dc into 2nd ch from hook, 2dc into last ch, turn. [3 sts]

Row 1 Ch1, dc in each st to end, turn.

Row 2 Ch1, 2dc into first st, ch1, 2dc into last st, turn. [5 sts]

Work 43 (45: 49: 51) rows in dc st.

Now split the strap to create the twin button fastener.

Next row Ch1, 2dc, turn, leaving rem sts unworked.

Work 5 rows in dc st.

Next row Ch1, 1dc, ch1, 1dc, turn. [3 sts]

Next row Ch1, dc into each st, turn.

Next row Ch1, dc3tog. Fasten off.

Skipping the centre st, rejoin yarn to the following st with a ss.

Next row Ch1, 2dc, turn.

Work 5 rows in dc st.

Next row Ch1, 1dc, ch1, 1dc, turn. [3 sts]

Next row Ch1, dc into each st, turn.

Next row Ch1, dc3tog. Fasten off.

TO FINISH

Weave in all ends.

Sew one short side of each Button Band across the bottom of each waist opening, so that the button band covers the opening.

Sew three buttons on each side of waist opening to line up with buttonholes on Button Bands.

Sew one button in each top corner of the Bib.

Sew two buttons on each side of the Back waistband for securing the Straps. Use the buttons to attach the Straps, using the images as a guide.
