CROCHETING THE SOCK (MAKE 2)

Chain 7.

Set-Up Row: Working into back bump of each ch, esc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. You now have 6 esc.

Rnd 1: Working on opposite sides of the foundation ch, 2 esc in same ch, esc in next 4 ch, 2 esc in next ch; continuing on Set-Up Row sts, working in a spiral, 2 esc in first esc, esc in next 4 sts, 2 esc in next st, do not join. You now have 16 sts. Pm in the first st of the rnd and move it up as you work the rnds.

Rnd 2: (2 esc in next st, esc in next 6 sts, 2 esc in next st) twice. You now have 20 sts.

Rnd 3: (2 esc in next st, esc in next 8 sts, 2 esc in next st) twice, esc in next st (marked st) to shift beginning of rnd; move marker to following st to indicate new beginning of rnd. You now have 24 sts.

Rnds 4-9: Esc in each st around.

Rnd 10: (2 esc in next st, esc in next 10 sts, 2 esc in next st) twice. You now have 28 sts.

Rnd 11: Esc in each st around.

Rnd 12: (2 esc in next st, esc in next 12 sts, 2 esc in next st) twice. You now have 32 sts.

Rnd 13: Esc in next 16 sts. Loosely ch 16, skip next 16 sts for heel opening; place a contrasting stitch marker in the first skipped st of this rnd. Before continuing, make sure that chain is not twisted.

Rnds 14-16: Esc in each st around.

Rnd 17: (Esc2tog, esc in next 12 sts, esc2tog) twice. You now have 28 sts.

Rnd 18: Esc in each st around.

Rnd 19-23: (Esc in next st, FPdc in next st) 14 times.

Note: Be careful when you are making your esc sts as it's easy to accidentally skip a st after working a post st. It helps to count your sts after Rnd 19 to make sure you are placing your esc sts correctly.

Rnd 24: (Esc in next st, FPdc in next st) 13 times, sc in next st, slip st in last st. Fasten off.

THE HEEL

Hold the sock so that the ribbed cuff is pointing away from you and the toe is pointing toward your lap. The heel opening should be facing out, ready to be worked into across the under-the-foot edge of the heel opening.

Rnd 1: Insert hook into the corner of the heel opening just to the right of the marked st and pull up a Loop, ch 1 (does not count as st), esc in same space, esc in marked st and in remaining 15 skipped sts across heel opening, 2 esc in corner of heel opening; working across opposite edge of heel opening in chain sts, esc into each of next 16 ch, esc in same corner of the heel opening as the first st of rnd. Do not join. You now have 36 sts. Pm in the first st of the rnd and move it up as you work the rnds.

Rnd 2: (Esc2tog, esc in next 14 sts, esc2tog) twice. You now have 32 sts.

Rnd 3: (Esc2tog, esc in next 12 sts, esc2tog) twice. You now have 28 sts.

Rnd 4: (Esc2tog, esc in next 10 sts, esc2tog) twice. You now have 24 sts.

Rnd 5: (Esc2tog, esc in next 8 sts, esc2tog) twice. You now have 20 sts.

Rnd 6: (Esc2tog, esc in next 6 sts, esc2tog) twice. You now have 16 sts.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

FINISHING
