To make the pillow
Using MC, ch72.
Row 1: dc2 into 3rd ch from hook, dc1 into next ch3, work [dc3tog over next ch3] twice, dc1 into next ch3, dc3 into next st, *change to CC of choice, dc3 into next ch, dc1 into next ch3, work [dc3tog over next ch3] twice, dc1 into next ch3, dc3 into next ch, change to MC, dc3 into next ch, dc1 into next ch3, work [dc3tog over next ch3] twice, dc1 into next ch3, dc3 into next ch, rep from * once more, turn. (5 chevrons)
Keeping chevron block colors correct as set, work next row as follows.
Row 2: ch2 (counts as first dc), dc2 into st, *dc1 into next 3sts, work [dc3tog over next 3sts] twice, dc1 into next 3sts**, work [dc3 into next st] twice, rep from * 4 more times, ending last rep at **, work dc3 into top of ch2 at beg of previous row, turn.
Row 2 forms chevron pattern; repeat Row 2 twice more. Fasten off yarn.
Row 5: work as Row 2 starting with CC of choice, then MC.
Repeat Row 5 three more times. Fasten off yarn.
Keeping chevron block pattern as set, repeat until 16 sets of the four-row chevrons have been worked.
On last row of final chevron do not fasten off yarn; join in MC for button band.
To make the buttonholes
Row 1: ch2 (counts as first dc), dc2 into first st, *dc1 into next 3sts, work [dc3tog over next 3sts] twice, dc1 into next 3sts**, ch3, skip 2sts, rep from * 4 more times, ending last rep at **, dc3 into top of ch2 at beg of previous row, turn.
Row 2: ch2 (counts as first dc), dc2 into first st, dc1 into next 3sts, *work [dc3tog over next 3sts] twice, dc1 into next st, dc8 into ch3sp, dc1 into next st, rep from * 3 more times, work [dc3tog over next 3sts] twice, dc1 into next 3sts, dc3 into top of ch2 at beg of previous row. Fasten off yarn and weave in loose ends.
Finishing
Block the fabric. With WS facing, make an envelope by folding the plain edge over the buttonholed edge. Make sure that the length of your folded cover measures the same as the width to make it approx 16" square. Sew down the sides of the cover using matching yarn and backstitch. Turn RS out, making sure the corners are pointed (use a pencil to push the corner out), then sew buttons onto the plain edge to correspond with the buttonholes. Insert pillow form.
