22 sts and 28 rows over st st using 4mm needles to make a 10cm or 4in square

PANEL (WORKING OVER 31 STS)

Row 1 (RS): P15, k1, p15.

Row 2 (WS): K15, p1, k15.

Row 3: P14, k3, p14.

Row 4: K14, p3, k14.

Row 5: P13, k5, p13.

Row 6: K13, p5, p13.

Rows 7-20: Cont in this way working 2 more sts on RS rows at centre in st st on every RS row thus widening centre diamond by 2 sts on every alt row.

Row 21: P5, k10, yf, skpo, k9, p5.

Row 22: K5, p21, k5.

Row 23: P4, k9, k2tog, yf, k1, yf, skpo, k9, p4.

Rows 24, 26, 28 and 30: Continue as before knitting all knit sts at each side of centre diamond as they present and purling all remaining sts.

BACK

Using 3.25mm needles cast on 87 (99:109:121:131) sts and work 7 rows in g st.

Change to 4mm needles and beg with a purl row work in rev st st until back measures 18cm (7in) from beg, ending after a knit row.

Shape dolman sleeves

Using a circular 4mm needle but working backwards and forwards in rows, not rounds, inc 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll 4th row until there are 95 (107:117:129:139) sts. **

Inc 1 st at each end of every foll purl row until there are 107 (119:129:141:151) sts.

Knit 1 row.

*** Now inc 1 st at each end of every row until there are 135 (147:157:193:203) sts. Cast on 3 sts at beg of every row until there are 201 (213:223:235:245) sts.

Finally cast on 4 sts at beg of next 6 rows. 225 (237:247:259:269) sts ***

Place a marker at centre of last row.

Cont straight until work measures 13 (14:15:16:17) cm, 5 (5 1/2:6:6 1/4:6 1/2) in, from marker, ending after a knit row.

Shape shoulders

Cast off 19 (20:20:21:25) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 18 (19:20:21:21) sts at beg of next 8 rows.

Slip rem 43 (45:47:49:51) sts on a stitch holder to work later.

FRONT

Work as back to **.

Knit 1 row.

Place a marker at each side of the centre 31 sts. This will aid you while you are working the panel.

Cont with shaping working centre 31 sts from panel as follows:

Row 1: Inc in first st, purl to centre 31 sts, work 31 sts from row 1 of panel, p to last st, inc in last st.

Row 2: Knit to centre 31 sts, work 31 sts from row 2 of panel, knit to end.

Rows 3-12: Rep rows 1-2 five times but working rows 3-12 of panel.

107 (119:129:141:151) sts

Work as back from *** to *** working rows 13-54 (54:54:58:58) of panel across the centre 31 sts.

Work 8 (8:8:4:4) rows straight thus completing the 62 rows of panel.

Cont straight in rev st st on all sts until front measures 20 (22:22:24:26) rows less than back up to start of shoulder shaping, ending after a knit row.

Shape neck

Next row (RS): P96 (101:105:110:114), turn.

Continue on this group of sts for the left half of neck.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on the next 3 rows, then on the 2 foll alt rows leaving you with 91 (96:100:105:109) sts

Work 12 (14:14:16:18) rows straight, thus ending at sleeve edge.

Shape shoulder

Cast off 19 (20:20:21:25) sts at beginning of next row.

Work 1 row straight.

Cast off 18 (19:20:21:21) sts at beg of next row and the 2 foll alt rows.

Work 1 row straight.

Cast off rem 18 (19:20:21:21) sts.

With RS facing, slip next 33 (35:37:39:41) sts on a stitch holder and leave.

Neatly rejoin yarn to rem 96 (101:105:110:114) sts and purl to end of the row.

Complete as left half of neck working 1 row more before shaping shoulder.

Neckband

Join left shoulder. Using 3.25mm needles and right sides facing knit across sts of back neck, pick up and knit 22 (24:24:25:27) sts evenly down left side of front neck, knit across sts of front neck, finally pick up and knit 22 (24:24:25:27) sts evenly up right sides of front neck.

120 (128:132:138:146) sts

Work 8 rows in g st.

Sleeve borders

Join right shoulder and neckband.

Using 4mm needles and right sides facing knit up 56 (60:64:68:72) sts evenly along sleeve edge.

Work 8 rows in g st.

Cast off using the simple cast off as seen in our tutorial below.

MAKING UP

Join side and sleeve seams, including sleeve borders.
