Lanaloft Sport Weight by Brown Sheep Company, 1 3/4oz/50g balls, each approx 145yd/133m (wool)

9 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14) balls each in #555C saltwater taffy (A) and #LL01S cottage white (B)

One pair each sizes 9 and 10 1/2 (5.5 and 6.5mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

One size 9 (5.5mm) circular needle, 16"/40cm long

Split ring st markers, stitch holders

Row 1 (WS) Purl.

Row 2 (RS) *P1, K1B (k1 st in the row below the st on the needle); rep from *, end p2.

Rep row 2 for fisherman's rib pat.

NOTE

Work with 1 strand of A & B held tog throughout.

BACK

With smaller needles and 1 strand each A & B held tog, cast on 79 (83, 87, 91, 95, 99, 103) sts.

Row 1 (RS) K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end.

Cont in k1, p1 rib for 16 rows more.

Next row (WS) P to last 2 sts, p2tog—78 (82, 86, 90, 94, 98, 102) sts.

Change to larger needles and cont in fisherman's rib pat until piece measures 6"/15cm from beg. Dec row (RS) P1, K1B, p1, SK2P, work in rib to the last 7 sts, SK2P, rib 4—4 sts dec'd. Rep dec row every 3"/7.5cm (or 22nd row) twice more—66 (70, 74, 78, 82, 86, 90) sts.

Work even until piece measures 18"/45.5cm from beg.

Shape armhole

Bind off 4 (4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec row (RS) P1, K1B, p1, SK2P, work in rib to the last 7 sts, SK2P, rib 4—4 sts dec'd. Shape shoulder

Dec row (RS) P1, SK2P, rib to the last 5 sts, SK2P, p2—4 sts dec'd.

Rep this dec row every 4th row 4 (4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) times more—26 (30, 30, 34, 34, 34, 34) sts.

Shape neck

Row 1 (RS) Work to 1 st before marker, SK2P removing marker, sl the center 11 (15, 15, 19, 19, 19, 19) sts to a st holder, join 2 new balls of yarn and SK2P removing marker, work to end.

There are 6 sts on right shoulder and 5 sts on left shoulder.

Row 2 Work even on sts on both sides.

Row 3 (RS) First side: P1, SK2P, p2tog; 2nd side: SK2P, p2. There are 3 sts on each side.

Row 4 First side: K2tog, p1; 2nd side: K2tog, p1.

Last row Bind off 2 sts each side.

FRONT

Note The front armhole dec's are different from the back and the front has a straight shoulder (and deeper armhole measurement) to fit into the sloped back shoulder. See Schematic.

Work same as back to the armhole shaping.

Shape armhole

Bind off 4 (4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec row (RS) P1, K1B, p1, SK2P, work in rib to the last 7 sts, SK2P, rib 4-4 sts dec'd.

Rep dec row every 4th row 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2) times more—50 (54, 58, 62, 62, 66, 66) sts. Work even until armhole measures 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8)"/11.5 (12.5, 14, 15, 16.5, 19, 20.5)cm.

Note On the last WS row, pm to mark the center 6 (10, 10, 14, 14, 14, 14) sts.

Shape neck

Row 1 (RS) Work to 1 st before marker, SK2P removing marker, sl the center 3 (7, 7, 11, 11, 11, 11) sts to a st holder, join 2 new balls of yarn and SK2P removing marker, work to end.

There are 22 (22, 24, 24, 24, 26, 26) sts on left shoulder and 21 (21, 23, 23, 23, 25, 25) sts on right shoulder.

Row 2 Work even on sts on both sides.

Row 3 First side: Rib to last 5 sts, SK2P, p2; 2nd side: P2tog, rib to end.

Rows 4, 5 and 6 Work even on sts each side.

Row 7 First side: Rib to last 5 sts, SK2P, rib 2; 2nd side: P1, SK2P, rib to end - 18 (18, 20, 20, 20, 22, 22) sts each side.

Work even until armhole measures 9 (9 1/2, 10, 10 1/2, 11, 12, 12 1/2)"/23 (24, 25.5, 26.5, 28, 30.5, 32)cm. Bind off sts each side.

SLEEVES

With smaller needles and 1 strand each A & B held tog, cast on 31 (35, 39, 43, 51, 55, 59) sts.

Row 1 (RS) K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end.

Cont in k1, p1 rib for 16 rows more.

Next row (WS) P to last 2 sts, p2tog—30 (34, 38, 42, 50, 54, 58) sts. Change to larger needles and cont in fisherman's rib pat until piece measures 6 1/2"/16.5cm from beg.

**lnc row 1 (RS) Pfb, rib to last 2 sts, pfb, p1.

Inc row 2 (WS) Rep inc row 1—4 sts inc'd over 2 rows. Work 20 rows even **.

Rep between **'s 3 times more—46 (50, 54, 58, 66, 70, 74) sts. Work even until piece measures 18"/45.5cm from beg.

Shape cap

Bind off 4 (4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Work 2 rows even.

Dec row (RS) P1, SK2P, rib to the last 5 sts, SK2P, p2. Rep dec row every 6th row 5 (5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) times more, every 4th row 0 (1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5) times—14 sts. Bind off sts on next row.

FINISHING

Sew shoulder seams.

Neckband

With circular needle and 1 strand each A & B held tog, pick up and k 6 sts from shaped back neck, k 11 (15, 15, 19, 19, 19, 19) sts from holder, pick up and k 6 sts from shaped back neck, 25 sts from shaped front neck, k3 (7, 7, 11, 11, 11, 11) sts from front holder, pick up and k 25 sts from shaped front neck—76 (84, 84, 92, 92, 92, 92) sts. Join to work in rnds and pm to mark beg of rnds. Work in k1, p1 rib for 6 rnds. Bind off in rib. Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
