TENSION

17 sts and 26 rows to 10cm over st st on 5.5mm needles, after light blocking.

Each pattern repeat measures 18 sts - 11cm wide at the bottom; 14 sts - 8cm wide at the top; 40 rows tall - 16cm measured along the centre of the leaf. Worked on 5.5mm needles, after light blocking.

PATTERN NOTES

When making a yarnover after a purl stitch, bring the yarn over the needle from back to front.

When making a yarnover after a knit stitch, take the yarn over the needle from front to back.

SHAWL

Using 6mm needles, loosely cast on 385 sts.

Change to 5.5mm needles.

Set-up row (RS): K3, pm, work row 1 of Leaf Chart to last 3 sts, pm, K3.

Next row: K3, slm, work the following row of Chart to mrk, slm, K3.

Keeping the 3 sts on either end in garter st, continue working as set by the last row until all 40 rows of Chart have been completed, ending with a WS row. 301 sts.

Next row (RS): K3, K6, s2kpo, *K11, s2kpo; rep from * to last 9 sts, K6, K3. 259 sts.

Next row (WS): Knit.

Shape the inner portion of the shawl with short rows as follows:

Row 1 (RS): K3, slm, K132, K2tog tbl, K4, turn. 1 st dec'd.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 pwise wyif, P15, P2tog tbl, P4, turn. 1 st dec'd.

Row 3: Sl 1 pwise wyib, knit to one st before gap, K2tog tbl to close gap, K4, turn. 1 st dec'd.

Row 4: Sl 1 pwise wyif, purl to one st before gap, P2tog to close gap, P4, turn. 1 st dec'd.

Repeat rows 3 and 4, 22 more times, slm, K3. 211 sts.

Next row (RS): K3, slm, K4, K2tog, *K5, K2tog; rep from * to 3 sts before mrk, K3, slm, K3. 182 sts.

Beginning and ending with a WS row, work 9 rows in garter st.

Cast off all sts loosely.

FINISHING

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

Wet shawl thoroughly and remove any excess water before blocking.

Pin the shawl to measurements, spreading it out evenly. It is possible to block the shawl to a larger shape since the lace fabric is very stretchy. To do so, pin following the blocking diagram first, then stretch each point outwards until you are happy with the size.

Leave to dry. Unpin and weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.
