21 sts and 27 rows to 10cm over st st on 4.5mm needles

SIDE PANELS(make 6)

Using 4.5mm needles, cast on 51 sts using the lace method to obtain a loose edge.

Foundation row: K1, P to last st, K1.

Note: it helps to mark the centre st with a coloured thread.

Break yarn, thread tail through rem st and fasten off.

CENTRE PANEL

Using 4.5mm needles, cast on 63 sts loosely.

Foundation row: K1, P to last st, K1.

Row 1 (RS): K6, (yo, skpo, K8) to last 7 sts, yo, skpo, K5.

Row 2 and every alt row: K1, P to last st, K1.

Row 3: K4, (K2tog, yo, K1, yo, skpo, K5) to last 9 sts, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, skpo, K4.

Row 5: K3, (K2tog, yo, K3, yo, skpo, K3) to end.

Row 7: K2, (K2tog, yo, K5, yo, skpo, K1) to last st, K1.

Row 9: K1, K2tog, yo, (K7, yo, sk2po, yo) to last 10 sts, K7, yo, skpo, K1.

Row 11: K3, (yo, skpo, K3, K2tog, yo, K3) to end.

These 16 rows form the patt.

Work a further 82 rows in patt, ending on a row 2.

Break yarn. Slip sts on a length of yarn and leave.

UPPER BORDER

Join sections using a flat seam, placing 3 side panels at each side of centre panel. Note: if you prefer working with two 4mm needles in place of a circular needle, work the border in two sections separately, and then join the inner side edges of the border at centre.

You may also work the lower border in two sections separately on 4mm needles.

Using 4mm circular needles, and with RS facing, pick up and K one st from every row end (98 sts) at outer edge of right edge, K across 63 sts on length of yarn inc 10 sts evenly, pick up and K one st from every row end (98 sts) at left edge. 269 sts.

Working backwards and forwards in rows, knit 4 rows.

Cast off knitways, working firmly across side panels and loosely across centre panel.

LOWER BORDER

Using 4mm circular needle, and with RS facing, pick up and K3 from edge of garter st border, then one st from every loop across cast-on edges of the 7 sections (51 sts for each side panel, 63 sts for the centre panel), finally K3 from other edge of garter st border. 375 sts.

Knit 4 rows.

Cast off to form picot: cast off 3 sts, * slip st on right needle back onto left needle, cast on 3 sts, cast off 7 sts; rep from * until no sts remain.

FINISHING

Lightly darn in any ends on WS.

With WS facing, block shawl to shape by pinning out round edges. Lay a slightly damp cloth over knitting and leave to dry overnight. Alternatively, place a dry cloth over WS of shawl and very lightly press with a warm iron and steam set on a low setting, following any yarn care instructions on the ball band.
