Bergere de France Bergereine 50% wool, 50% cotton (approx 95m per 50g ball)

12[13:14:15:16] x 50g balls 53025 Cirrus

Pair each of 3.5mm and 4mm needles

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

TENSION

21 sts and 28 rows to 10cm (4in) over st st using 4mm needles.

23 sts and 28 rows to 10cm (4in) over cable patt using 4mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

ABBREVIATIONS

1CL2K = sl 1 st onto cn at front of work, k2, then k1 from cn.

PATTERN NOTE

Cable patt:

Worked over a number of sts divisible by 15 + 2.

Row 1 (RS): P2, *k3, p2* rep from * to *.

Rows 2 and 4: K2, *p3, k2* rep from * to *. 

Row 3: P2, k3, p2, k3, p2, *1CL2K, p2, k3, p2, k3, p2* rep from * to *.

Rep Rows 1 to 4.

BACK

Using 3.5mm needles cast on 106[114:122:130:142] sts.

Row 1 (RS): *k2, p2* rep from *to* ending with k2.

Row 2: *p2, k2* rep from *to* ending with p2.

These 2 rows form 2/2 rib, cont as est until work measures 8cm (3in) (26 rows) total. Change to 4mm needles and starting with a knit row cont in st st, decreasing 10[9:9:9:10] sts evenly across 1st row. 96[105:113:121:132] sts.

Armholes

When work measures 46[47:48:48:49]cm (18[18.5:18.75:18.75:19.25]in) (132[134:138:138:140] rows) total slip a stitch marker into the first and last stitch of row to mark the beg of the armholes (see diagram) and cont in st st until work measures 64[66:68:70:72]cm (25[26:26.75:27.5:28.25]in) (182[188:194:200:204] rows) total.

Shoulders and neck

Cast off 7[7:8:9:10] sts, work 26[29:31:33:37] sts, cast off the central 30[33:35:37:38] sts for the neck, work rem 33[36:39:42:47] sts.

Each side will now be completed separately. 

Next row (WS): Cast off 7[7:8:9:10] sts, work to central cast-off sts and put rem sts on a stitch holder.

*Next row (neck edge): Cast off 3 sts, work to end.

Next row (shoulder edge): Cast off 7[8:8:9:10] sts, work to end.

Next row: Cast off 2 sts, work to end.

Next row: Cast off 7[8:9:9:11] sts.

Work 1 row straight.

Cast off rem 7[8:9:10:11] sts*.

With WS facing, pick up sts left on the stitch holder and rep from * to *.

FRONT

Using 3.5mm needles cast on 106[114:122:130:142] sts.

Work in 2/2 rib as for Back until work measures 8cm (3in) (26 rows) total.

Change to 4mm needles and starting with a knit row cont in st st, decreasing 10[9:9:9:10] sts evenly across 1st row. 96:105:113:121:132 sts.

When work measures 31[31.5:33:31.5:32.5]cm (12.25[12.5:13:12.5:12.75] in) (90[92:96:92:94] rows) total cont to work in cable patt following the Chart for size being made.

Armholes

When work measures 46[47:48:48:49]cm (18[18.5:18.75:18.75:19.25]in) (132[134:138:138:140] rows) total slip a stitch marker into the first and last stitch of row to mark the beg of the armholes (see black arrows on the diagram).

After Row 57[57:57:69:69] of Chart has been worked you will have 105[115:123:133:145] sts.

After the final row of the Chart has been worked cont to repeat the foll rows:

Sizes S, M and L

From Rows 75 to 78 of Chart.

Sizes XL and XXL

From Rows 81 to 84 row of Chart.

Neck

When work measures 60[62:64:66:68]cm (23.5[24.5:25.25:26:26.75]in) (170[176:182:188:192] rows) total, cont as foll:

Next row (RS): Patt 38[42:45:49:54] sts, cast off the central 29[31:33:35:37] sts for neck, patt 38[42:45:49:54].

Each side will now be completed separately.

Next row (WS): Patt to cast off sts and put rem sts on a stitch holder.

*Cont to cast off at neck edge on next and every alt row: 3 sts once, 2 sts once, 1 st 3 times. 30[34:37:41:46] sts.

Shoulder

When work measures 64[66:68:70:72]cm (25[26:26.75:27.5:28.25]in) (182[188:194:200:204] rows) total, cast off at shoulder edge on every alt row: 7[8:9:10:11] sts 2[2:3:3:2] times, 8[9:10:11:12] sts 2[2:1:1:2] times*.

With WS facing, pick up sts left on stitch holder and rep neck and shoulder shaping from * to *.

LEFT SLEEVE

Using 3.5mm needles cast on 54[54:58:58:62] sts.

Work in 2/2 rib as for Back until work measures 8cm (3in) (26 rows) total, but on the final row for sizes M and XL inc 2 sts. 54[56:58:60:62] sts.

Change to 4mm needles and, starting with a knit row, cont in st st for 12[10:10:8:8] rows.

Next row (RS - inc): k2, inc 1, work to last 2 sts, inc 1, k2.

Rep this inc on every foll 12th[10th:10th:8th:8th] row 3[12:8:14:11] times, then on every foll 10th[0:8th:6th:6th] row 8[0:5:2:6] times. 78[82:86:94:98] sts.

Top of sleeve

When work measures 58cm (22.75in) (166 rows) total leave all sts on a spare needle.

RIGHT SLEEVE

Using 3.5mm needles cast on 54[54:58:58:62] sts.

Work in 2/2 rib as for Back until work measures 8cm (3in) (26 rows) total, but on the final row for sizes M and XL inc 2 sts. 54[56:58:60:62] sts.

Change to 4mm needles and, starting with a knit row, cont in st st, increasing as for Left Sleeve.

AT THE SAME TIME when work measures approx 31cm (12.25in) (89 rows) total and you have 64[68:70:74:76] sts cont to work from the Chart for Right Sleeve as foll:

Chart row 1 (WS): Work 7 inc as shown on the Chart. 71[75:77:81:83] sts.

Cont to work the cable patt from Chart, keeping the side inc correct until you have 85[89:93:101:105] sts.

Note: The increases 2 sts in from the edge are not shown on the Chart.

Top of sleeve

When work measures 58cm (22.75in) (166 rows) total, leave all 85[89:93:101:105] sts on a spare needle.

NECKBAND

Using 3.5mm needles cast on 102[106:110:114:118] sts.

Work in 2/2 rib as for Back for 5 rows, leave sts on a spare needle.

TO FINISH OFF

Join shoulder seams.

Using backstitch graft the neckband around neck edge and join the short edges together. Graft the tops of the sleeves into the armholes between the two stitch markers. Sew the side and sleeve seams.

Secure and weave in all the ends.
